Should kids be taught politics in high school?

After a week of trying to spark conversations with friends about their own beliefs and their political views, I have come to the sad conclusion that a large percentage of the younger generation do not fully understand what, or why they are voting.

One didn’t know the meaning of the word manifesto, and another wanted to vote UKIP because she enjoys the colour purple. It is very rare to find teens having a discussion about politics and most are negatively labelled for taking an interest in the subject. It is worrying that eighteen year olds are choosing to vote flippantly about their future, the policies they choose effect everything from the university fees they pay to the shoes on their feet, yet nobody seems to be too stirred about Thursdays events.

A large majority of teenagers vote for their parents politics and seem to have their parents views, which aren’t necessarily what they would believe had they been given the knowledge to choose for themself, embellished in their minds. It is not a truth that the Conservative party play only for the rich and Labour party support only the poor, this is what your children, our country’s future generation believe.

Another young boy who turned 18 a few weeks before the election said he wanted to vote UKIP as a protest vote, he had never heard of spoiling his paper! His friend believed that by spoliling your paper you, “aren’t going to make a difference.”

If we explore the younger population,  14-16, some seem interested in wanting to vote at 16, but are again negatively labelled by others who think Nicola Sturgeon was the person who helped make Rihanna’s dress for the MET Gala this week.

I believe it is vital for children to be taught politics in high school for them to be able to grasp a concept of each party and build their own political values. They deserve to have their own say about their future.

Do you agree?

Arghh Lush soap!

I have a huge obsession with Lush, and I wouldn’t know where to start when it comes to their soap range! However, this week I have invested in a little beauty called bohemian. It’s citrus sent is too tempting, I have been looking for this type of sent everywhere! The Body Shop used to sell a sweet lemon range until they upgraded and I was in love with it and extremely disappointed when they scrapped it for good. It seems to me that this soap is the next best thing!

LGBT history month – The Harvey Milk Foundation

Today I attended a talk led by Stuart Milk, well know for supporting the LGBT movement and also the nephew of Harvey Milk one of the worlds first openly gay elected officials.

Stuart has been supporting and spreading word about his uncles work for 2 decades on a global scale, he wasn’t just raising awareness about his uncle Harvey but also about how it is okay to ‘feel different’ to others.

Harvey Milk served less than a year in public office before his assassination, however his work changed not only states and nations but people’s lives and of course the rights and actions of modern day LGBT movement.

I think the fact that Stuart has chosen to raise awareness of Harvey Milk’s work and influence on many communities is truly amazing. Especially in today’s society where we are experiencing living history and changing the way the world looks upon the LGBT community entirely.

It is important for people to understand that it is completely okay to support and to be LGBT as many young teens do not fully understand what exactly LGBT stands for and what they support, but may have many friends who may be LGBT.

I am so grateful to have been able to have this experience!

Lush Haul #1

This week I took one of my frequent trips to my favorite store, Lush.
I purchased quite a few items, including christmas presents for friends and family, and of course the odd item or two for myself!

Butterbear Bath Bomb

IMG_2740.JPG
“A vanilla scented bath bomb with cocoa butter to soften the skin.”

This product fizzed quite quickly and left the water clear and bubble-less. I find bubbles quite annoying when trying to take a relaxing soak and so this didn’t bother me that much. The fizzer left the water feeling velvety, and when out of the bath there was no need to moisturize as my skin felt silky smooth and smelt delicious. Glitter wise there seemed to be a small shimmer to the water but not as noticable as most Lush products. However, it made a tired me very happy indeed and so I will definitely be buying this product again!

Cinders Bath Bomb

“Drop into your bath for fireside comfort”

Although at first it looks peach in colour, dropped in a bath it gives off a warm yellow colour that sizzles! It smells amazing and has a scent of a burnt out campfire. There isn’t much glitter with this product but It’s a great way to relax!

Father Christmas Bath Bomb

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/428/76782460/files/2014/12/img_2742-0.jpg
“A sweet scented festive bomb to bring Santa’s Christmas presents into your bath”

This bomb splits when dunked into a warm bath and leaks a beautiful vivid apple green colour, the smell is delicious, and you can’t help but feel festive afterwards! I think this is my favourite festive product!

I also purchased the melting snowman bath melt – “melt away festive fatigue with this cocoa butter bath melt”

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/428/76782460/files/2014/12/img_2802.jpg
I haven’t used this product yet, however I have heard many fantastic reviews about how soft it can make your skin feel, and a big plus for me is that it smells of chocolate!

I also purchased the Shoot for the stars bath bomb – “paint the swirling colours of the night skies over the surface of your bath water”

Again this one hasn’t been used yet as I’m saving it to use last! I’m super excited to see this one in action!

Whilst there I knew I had to buy some shower jelly. This stuff is the best, not only is it a shower gel but it can act as a shampoo too! I love ‘Whoosh’ which has a citrus sent and is bright blue, however this time I decided on ‘Sweetie Pie’ which has a lovely fruity sent and leaves your hair smelling amazing all day.

At the checkout I spotted the charity pot of hand and body lotion, this is only £1 and 100% of the proceeds go to good causes! It also works wonders for your skin, leaving it silky smooth and as always it smells amazing, and for the size and price of the pot you get a surprising amount of product, this is one of my most essential buys from Lush and every trip I take I bring home one of these small delights!

And so that’s it this time round! I have always been a fan of the festive season at Lush, and look forward to seeing traditional products in stores such as Snow Fairy as well as some new fancy things to put alongside them!

What are your favourite festive Lush products?

Emotional Baggage Check

We all have those moments when we feel a little down and lost, and we’re just looking for someone to listen to us, to advise or guide us. emotionalbaggagecheck.com allows you to anonymously vent to other anonymous members of the public.

Personally I think this is a great service, which provides a platform and a safe place for people to share their troubles and recieve advice from others. It is somewhere that you can go to anonymously admit or discuss things that you may feel uncomfortable saying aloud.

It is really simple to use:

Checking your baggage

To check baggage, click the link below, and click ‘check’ here you will be asked to provide an email address, (don’t worry, this will remain private, the other person will not see this address however their feedback will be sent to this address), then you can type in your worries or your ‘vent’.

Carrying baggage

To help somebody else with a problem, click ‘carry’, this will then take you to a page where you can read a ‘vent’, from here you can respond and/or send a song by tagging a YouTube or Soundcloud link. This will then be sent to the person, and you can know that you may have solved their problems completely or helped them along the way.

This is a brilliant service that may be potentially lifesaving. So please visit the page and have a look around and if you fancy post a concern or help someone out.

The Book Thief (reviewed)

Before wanting to venture into the world of netflix and watch The Book Thief (as recommended by a friend) I decided to follow the ever long prophecy, “the book is better than the film”, and delved into the pages of the book.

The storyline is beautifully written, narrated from deaths point of view, following his curiosity of human nature despite what he can see upon collecting their souls. The way Zusak has written Liesel Meminger as a character, to show her naivety towards the war and the additional political influences, is something to marvel at. The reader becomes fully involved in Liesels childhood, alongside the dramatic irony, the novel builds up to an upsetting revelation.

We spend most time with Liesel and her brazen-faced best friend Rudy Steiner on ‘Himmel Strasse’ (Sky Road) where their continuous games of football seemingly never end, and the ever perpetulant Rudy asks for a kiss at every opportunity.

Liesel gains her title as The Book Thief when she begins to break into the mayors home through an open window and steal a book, for Liesel this is revenge for the couple telling her mama (Rosa Hubermann) that they can no longer afford to keep paying her to provide their laundry services.

From cover to cover, it is thoroughly entertaining, allowing readers to envolve themselves and become a part of the community of characters, right up until the novels close.

The prophecy is correct, the book is much better than the film.

Leeds Festival 2014

This summer I attended the annual Leeds Festival hosted in Bramham Park, which I’m sure is such a beautiful place when it isn’t filled with tents and buzzing with energy that radiates from hormonal teenagers, itching to enter the arena and catch a glimpse of their idol or favourite bands, apart from the ones who just want to go on the rides and get a cheap pizza of course.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent there with my group of friends, who had experienced previous festivals, unlike myself (who was delirious from the long walk from the entrance to our camp site, and simply bewildered by the atrocities I had been presented with upon entering the toilets.)

I had my camera, ready in hand most days, to catch a shot or two of my many outings to the arena and to the village too, where typical car-boot salesmen shout out “bargin” every once in a while.

The atmosphere was outstanding, everyone laughing or smiling, tryring to make the best of the last days of their summer holidays in the dreary Leeds weather.

However, I did manage to create a vlog (video blog) of the whole event, and even now, take pleasure in reminding myself of those days of freedom in the freezing, wet weather.
